Overview

Umai Borneo Comfort Food, nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, offers a warm glimpse into Sarawak’s rich culinary heritage. This restaurant captures the essence of Borneo’s comfort dishes, inviting diners to explore flavors that are both familiar and distinctively rooted in East Malaysian culture.

The Sarawak Laksa stands out as the signature dish, delivering a balanced, mildly spiced broth enriched with creamy coconut milk. Its complexity is subtle yet satisfying, appealing to those who appreciate layered flavors without overwhelming heat. The thick rice vermicelli might feel modest in portion, but it allows the fragrant broth and fresh herbs to shine, creating a comforting and authentic bowl. For those eager to try something unique, the Umai — raw prawns soaked in a tangy lime marinade — offers a refreshing, firm bite that contrasts beautifully with cooked dishes.

Other menu highlights like Mee Tomato and Mee Kolok expand the experience by introducing local noodle variations. Mee Tomato boasts a rich, umami-packed sauce that stands out for its boldness and originality, while Mee Kolok carries a slightly unconventional twist with thicker noodles and generous slices of beef, blending familiarity with subtle innovation. The inclusion of classic Malaysian staples such as fried chicken rice and traditional beverages like 3 Layer Tea and Teh Tarik completes the culinary journey, appealing to a diverse audience ranging from Sarawakian natives to curious food enthusiasts.

Located on Persiaran Zaaba, the restaurant’s ambiance is casual and welcoming, enhanced by a vibrant mural that adds character to the space. While the environment fosters a comfortable dining experience, remarks about persistent flies suggest that a stronger focus on environmental hygiene would elevate the overall impression.

Umai Borneo Comfort Food strikes a balance between tradition and accessibility. It caters well to individuals and families seeking authentic yet approachable Sarawakian flavors in Kuala Lumpur. Consistency in taste remains an area for growth, but the overall experience is promising and worth a visit for those eager to explore Borneo’s culinary landscape without leaving the city. The friendly service and reasonable pricing make it a noteworthy spot among Kuala Lumpur’s diverse food scene.

A nice Sarawakian cafe restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail. I had their Laksa Sarawak (RM13.90) and Signature Sarawak Umai (RM6.90). Laksa Sarawak is pretty mild, not very heavy, with coconut milk yet very flavorful. I tried Umai for the first time and raw prawn soaked in a mixture of lime juice is not at all fish but firm to bite. Probably i’ll come back for Mee Kolo or Nasi Lalapan.

Nice Sarawak Laksa but vermicilli was too little that it needs to be scooped up for a better picture Kolo Mee was good. Tomato Fried Noodles was not too bad but would prefer that they use fried noodles that's more crunchy instead of instant type of noodles that's already soaked before frying. Overall was good despite serving was a little bit longer.

Laksa Sarawak was on point the 1st time I ate here. The 2nd time, lack flavors. Sambal hella spicy yo! Mee kolok is not as authentic as expected though. The noodles itself tastes and feels like a little bit like ramen. Unorthodox to put big slices of beef. Mee tomato on the other hand was hands down delicious. Small issue btw, there are always flies everywhere. Hope they rectify that by now cause it will not paint a good picture later in the future. Ambience, location and price is OK. Love the mural on the wall. Things to improve here is probably the consistency of the food and also the flies. Thanks!
